You never know where I may find inspiration for my posts. Yesterday it was in nature and the depth surrounding it. Today, I’m keeping it light. And real. And about food.
The inspiration today came from a friend’s Facebook post. She posted about how she gets yelled at by her kids for eating the cool food, even though she is the one that buys it. With her hard earned money.
Her post made me chuckle, because I’ve sooo been there. N does this all the time. I think he truly believes that my trips to the store are specifically to buy him stuff. It’s as if I don’t even live in the same house and need equal amounts of Lucky Charms for nourishment as he does.
I buy it. I pay for it. I should get to eat it, right? But here’s the deep, dark secret. I also get irritated if the boys (both the child and adult version) in the house eat something that I bought. Because here’s the thing. Usually, they don’t just eat a little of something I bought, but they eat ALL of it, or nearly so. Sometimes they leave some bird size crumbs for me to nibble on. And frankly, this is more insulting than if they just ate the whole damn thing. Do I look like a bird?! Do I eat like a bird?! Short answer: No. We all know this (see previous post #39 about working out).
So I have resulted to the low down, dirty game of hide and seek. I hide the food I really want. And then I seek it. Ha.
Oh come on, don’t shake your head like you’ve never done this before. If you haven’t done it with food, you know you’ve done it with those new shoes or handbag that you don’t want your husband to know you’ve purchased. Puh-lease.
Anyhoo – the question is this. Would I be happier if no one ate it? No. I don’t want to waste it! But I do want the chance to eat the good stuff too. And I want first dibs. The way I see it, I exerted the energy to go to the store and get it. And I bought it.
So there.

I got to the point where I now hide things in containers that others will not look in so I get my goodies. When they see the container of Shredded Wheat with Fruit inside, it’s really the Reese’s Pieces cereal. I grew up in a family of 5 with two brothers and the two times a year I managed to get to pick cereal, it’d be gone in 24 hours. I learned this trick from a friend in college because her boyfriend would come to our dorm room and hang out and snack.
