You GUYSSSSSS! Tonight is the Garth Brooks concert! I’ve never seen him perform live and have wanted to since college. I’m so excited!
Except for this. The concert is at 10:30pm. Yes. 10:30PM (yawn). I’m old, how will I ever stay awake for the start of this (rest assured once he’s on stage, I won’t be sleepy)? When I first started listening to Garth, I was a spry 18 year old kid attending her first year at the University of Minnesota. I was used to staying up late studying, going dancing or hanging out with my friends. Hell, we didn’t even start to go out for the evening until about 10pm most nights. Yet, now? I’m yawning by about 5pm, fighting the sleepies and looking forward to laying my head down on my pillow by 10:30. I’m thinking I’ll be hitting the Starbucks drive thru around 9pm as I head downtown. Maybe get a triple shot, no?
Anyhoo…all this talk about feeling old and finally seeing Garth Brooks in concert, had me reminiscing about the early 90’s when his album No Fences came out. A rush of memories came flooding back in. Mental images flashed through my mind like flipping through the pages of a magazine. The things we wore. Good Lord…the things we wore. For the love of overalls…what were we thinking? For those old enough, did you partake in the 90’s style by wearing any of the following?
- Leggings
- Big, baggy sweaters, sweatshirts and oversized t-shirts
- Keds tennis shoes with slouchy, white socks
- Denim button down shirts, with jeans, and maybe even a jean jacket (don’t forget acid washed)
- Gold rope or herringbone necklaces
- Scrunchies for your hair
- Perms. Yes, still perms.
- Flannel shirts
- High waisted (now known as ‘mom’) jeans
- Gap Khakis
- Belts…so many belts!
- Black, ribbed, short sleeve mock turtleneck sweaters from Gap
- Doc Martens
- Construction Boots (w/o the steel toe – these were fashion only my friends)
- Overalls (often with one side left undone – whaaaaat? why?)
- Choker necklaces
- Vests. Not puffer vests, but vests you might wear over a skin tight shirt, tank top or body suit
- Body suits. Yes, body suits…usually with a large scoop neck
- Sweaters tied around the waist
- Backwards baseball caps
- Oversized blazers
- Floral dresses
- Chunky Shoes
- Skin tight dresses (think Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct)
- Black tights under jean skirts
- Plaid everything
- Crop Tops
The list could go on and on…couldn’t it? Fashion is a curious thing, I tell you. Leggings, flannel shirts, Doc Martens and high waisted jeans…yes, high waisted jeans, they’re all back in fashion now.
So tonight, while I’m hanging with my friends in low places, rest assured I will NOT be wearing overalls. Not a chance. Perhaps a flannel shirt with some skinny jeans, that might happen. But no overalls or body suits. I promise!
What was your favorite or most coveted 90’s fashion item?

Oversized sweaters, 100%. Ugh.
